Refuse Derived Fuels

Saica owns and operates power plants in Spain and the UK which combust process residues from the company’s paper making activities combined with Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) to generate electricity and heat (process steam).

In addition to the energy facilities owned and operated by Saica, the company has become involved in acquiring, processing and trading significant volumes of both SRF and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuels) for export and use in energy facilities in Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and Latvia. All of the materials included in both SRF and RDF production are not suitable for recycling and energy recovery is the preferable environmental option instead of landfill disposal.  The export market from the UK to northern Europe is currently buoyant due to the lack of built capacity to combust these materials in the UK.  Alternative energy generation to the traditional gas, coal, oil and nuclear power stations in the UK is growing rapidly with new incentives being introduced by the Government for Renewable energy production.  In future years, the combustion of SRT / RDF is forecast to grow exponentially in the UK and Saica intends to be a part of this growth in alternative energy generation by managing SRF / RDF streams and by being the owner and operator of power generation facilities.
